You've decided to spend money on digital marketing — maybe ₹20,000 to start. The risk is spreading it across Google, Instagram, Facebook, an SEO agency and a "boost post" button, and ending the month with likes but no customers.
This guide shows where a first budget usually works best for small businesses in India, with three example splits, the free foundations to fix first, and how to tell whether your money is working.
Fix the free foundations first
Ads send people somewhere. If that "somewhere" is weak, you pay for clicks that never become customers. Before spending a rupee, check:
- Google Business Profile is verified, complete, with photos and recent reviews
- Website or landing page loads fast on mobile and clearly says what you do, where, and how to contact you
- WhatsApp Business is set up with a greeting, quick replies and business hours
- Click-to-call and WhatsApp buttons are visible on every page
- Tracking is installed: Google Analytics, Search Console and ad conversion tags
- Someone answers calls and messages quickly — slow replies waste ad money
Our local SEO checklist covers the Google side of this in detail.
Google Ads vs Meta Ads: what's the difference?
| Google Search Ads | Meta Ads (Facebook & Instagram) | |
|---|---|---|
| How people find you | They are actively searching ("AC repair near me") | They are scrolling; your ad interrupts them |
| Intent | High — ready to call or buy | Lower — discovering new things |
| Best for | Services people search for: repairs, clinics, coaching, B2B | Visual products, fashion, food, events, offers, brand awareness |
| Cost per click | Often higher | Often lower, but needs good creatives |
| What you need | Good keywords and a clear landing page | Eye-catching images or short videos |
A simple rule: if customers already search for what you sell, start with Google. If customers need to see your product to want it, start with Meta.
Three example ₹20,000 budget splits
These are starting points, not formulas. Your market, competition and margins matter.
1. Local service business (clinic, salon, coaching centre)
- ₹10,000 Google Search ads targeting "service + area" keywords within a few kilometres
- ₹6,000 Meta ads showing offers or before/after results to people nearby
- ₹4,000 content — good photos or short videos for your profile, posts and ads
2. Online store (WooCommerce or Shopify)
- ₹12,000 Meta / Instagram ads with product images, reels and retargeting of site visitors
- ₹5,000 Google Shopping or Search for product searches
- ₹3,000 tools — abandoned-cart reminders, WhatsApp order updates or email automation
3. B2B or professional service
- ₹12,000 Google Search ads on specific, high-intent keywords
- ₹5,000 LinkedIn posts promotion or targeted outreach
- ₹3,000 SEO and content — one strong article or case study a month
Your first-month plan
- Week 1: fix foundations, install tracking, decide one clear offer (e.g. "Free consultation" or "10% off first order").
- Week 1–2: launch one Google campaign and/or one Meta campaign — not five.
- Week 2: check search terms and comments; remove irrelevant keywords and weak ads.
- Week 3: move more budget to the ad or keyword that brings enquiries.
- Week 4: review cost per enquiry and cost per customer, then plan next month.
How to measure results
Likes and reach feel good but don't pay bills. Track these instead:
| Metric | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Enquiries (calls, WhatsApp, forms) | Is marketing creating real conversations? |
| Cost per enquiry | Budget spent ÷ number of enquiries |
| Enquiry-to-customer rate | How well your team converts leads |
| Cost per customer | Budget spent ÷ new paying customers |
| Customer value | What a customer is worth over time — compare it to cost per customer |
If a new customer is worth ₹5,000 to you and costs ₹1,500 to acquire, that channel is working — scale it carefully. If it costs more than they're worth, change the offer, targeting or landing page before adding budget.
Free channels that cost time, not money
Paid ads work fastest, but some of the best long-term results come from channels that cost effort rather than budget:
- Google Business Profile posts and photos — weekly updates keep your listing active and help local visibility.
- Reviews — a WhatsApp message with your review link after every happy customer.
- WhatsApp broadcast lists and Status — share offers with customers who saved your number.
- Instagram Reels — short behind-the-scenes, before/after or "how it works" videos shot on a phone.
- Helpful articles on your website — answer the questions customers ask you every day; they bring search traffic for years.
- Partnerships — cross-promotion with nearby non-competing businesses, local communities and associations.
What your ad landing page needs
Most wasted ad budget is caused by the page people land on, not the ad itself. Before launching, check that your landing page has:
- A headline that matches the ad exactly ("AC Repair in Kukatpally — Same-Day Service")
- Your price, starting price or offer, clearly visible
- Big tap-to-call and WhatsApp buttons near the top
- Real photos, reviews or client logos for trust
- A short form with only the fields you truly need
- Fast loading on mobile — ideally a few seconds on 4G
- Conversion tracking on calls, WhatsApp clicks and form submissions
Worked example: one month for a neighbourhood salon
Imagine a salon in Kukatpally with a ₹20,000 monthly budget (illustrative numbers):
- Google Search ads (₹10,000): keywords like "salon near me", "bridal makeup Kukatpally", "hair spa KPHB", limited to a 5 km radius and opening hours.
- Instagram ads (₹6,000): a reel showing a hair transformation, shown to women aged 20–45 within 5 km, with a "Book on WhatsApp" button.
- Content (₹4,000): a half-day shoot for reels and profile photos that will be reused for months.
At the end of the month the owner compares enquiries and bookings from each channel. If Google brought most bookings, next month's split shifts towards Google; if Instagram drove bridal enquiries, those creatives get more budget during wedding season.
Use WhatsApp to convert more of your leads
In India, many ad enquiries arrive on WhatsApp. Replying within minutes — with prices, a booking link or available slots — converts far better than replying the next day. Simple automation helps: an instant greeting, quick-reply buttons for prices and timings, and a reminder for people who asked but didn't book. Our guide to the WhatsApp Business API explains the options.
When to increase your budget
Increase spend only when a channel shows a cost per customer you are happy with for at least two to three weeks. Raise budgets gradually — around 20–30% at a time — so the platform's learning isn't disrupted, and keep watching cost per enquiry as you grow. If costs jump after an increase, step back and improve the offer, creative or landing page before trying again. Seasonal businesses should plan increases a few weeks before their peak, not on the day it starts.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Only boosting posts. The "Boost" button is easy but gives you less control than a proper campaign.
- Targeting all of India when you serve one city or a few areas.
- Sending ads to the homepage instead of a page about that exact service or product.
- Changing everything every day, which stops campaigns from learning.
- No follow-up. Many enquiries buy only after a reminder; use WhatsApp follow-ups.
- Believing guarantees. No honest marketer can promise "page 1 in a week" or a fixed number of sales.
Do it yourself or hire help?
If your budget is small and you have time, running one simple campaign yourself is a great way to learn. Hire help when ad spend grows, when results plateau, or when your time is better spent running the business. A good partner should report enquiries and cost per customer every month — not just impressions.
Our digital marketing plans start with the Growth plan at ₹4,999/month (SEO, Google Business Profile and social media) and the Pro plan at ₹9,999/month, which adds Google and Meta ads management. Ad spend is paid separately, directly to Google or Meta.
Frequently asked questions
Is ₹20,000 enough for digital marketing?
It is enough to test one or two channels properly for a local or niche business, especially if your Google profile and website are already in good shape. It is not enough to compete on broad, national keywords, so keep targeting focused.
Should I start with Google Ads or Instagram ads?
Start with Google Search ads if customers already search for your service. Start with Instagram and Facebook ads if your product is visual or impulse-driven, like fashion, food or events.
How quickly will I see results from ads?
Ads can bring enquiries within days of launching, but it usually takes 2–4 weeks of testing and adjusting to find the most cost-effective keywords, audiences and creatives. Results are never guaranteed.
Does the ₹4,999 plan include ad spend?
No. Our Growth (₹4,999/month) and Pro (₹9,999/month) plans cover the work of managing your marketing. Ad spend is paid directly to Google or Meta from your own account, so you stay in control of it.
